St Luke’s employs over 150 full-time and part-time teachers, supported by teachers’ aides, administrative staff, grounds staff and peripatetic tutors. The School currently has close to 1450 students, with approximately 1200 students at Dee Why and 250 students at Bayview.

St Luke’s Grammar School is one of eighteen schools that are part of the Anglican Schools Corporation (ASC) network of schools. The ASC works closely with the Principal and School Council to ensure wise oversight and governance of the School and provide support with core services including finance, IT, Compliance and Human Resources.

About the Role

St Luke’s Grammar School is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and professional educational leader to the position of Director of Studies (7-12). The teacher will be suitably qualified and enjoy working in a collaborative team. The successful applicant will be willing to contribute to the co-curricular life of the School and ideally be a Christian and actively involved in their church.

Reporting Relationships

  • The Director of Studies is accountable to the Deputy Principal
  • The Director of Studies works closely with the Head of Learning & Innovation to lead and manage the Heads of Department
  • The role also has supervision of a full-time Personal Assistant to the Director of Studies

Key Roles / Duties / Responsibilities

Teaching and Learning

  • Leadership and management of the academic program (7-12) of the School, driving a culture of academic excellence, continuous improvement and innovative learning
  • Actively support the implementation of theLEARNING@ST LUKE’S Framework
  • In conjunction with the Deputy, Academic Strategy and the Head of Learning & Innovation, lead staff in the development of outstanding classroom practice
  • Coordinate various study skills programs and academic seminars in the Senior School
  • Respond to parental/student enquiries related to their learning progress
  • Undertake a teaching load in negotiation with the Principal, modelling best teaching practice and effective classroom management

Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting

  • Provide strategic leadership with regard to curriculum, assessment and reporting, keeping up to date with research and trends in the wider educational landscape
  • Develop and implement Senior School policies and procedures relating to curriculum delivery and the assessment program, ensuring compliance with NESA requirements
  • Administer NESA, HSC/RoSA academic processes, including confirmation of entries, assessment marks and grades, and other record-keeping
  • Leadership of a quality assessment program (7-12), including:
    • Developing assessment schedules in conjunction with the Heads of Department
    • Overseeing markbooks in conjunction with the Heads of Department
    • Administration of examination timetables, supervision rosters and logistics
    • Oversee illness/misadventure applications, appeals and malpractice
    • In conjunction with the Head of Learning Enhancement, oversight and implementation of procedures relating to disability provisions
    • Production of Student Handbooks, information evenings and other communications regarding the assessment program
  • Coordinate student subject selection and patterns of study, including:
    • Information evenings for parents/students relating to subject selection
    • Processes for subject changes, ensuring compliance with NESA requirements
    • Lead interviews with students and parents regarding patterns of study
    • Liaise with Year Coordinators and other staff regarding student patterns of study
  • Oversee production and distribution of Senior School academic reports, including development of reporting schedules and quality control procedures
  • Coordinate other testing programs as required (NAPLAN, Minimum Standards for Literacy and Numeracy, etc)
  • Liaise with the External Studies Coordinator in relation to compliance matters with external providers (e.g. NSW School of Languages, Saturday School, TVET providers)
  • In conjunction with Heads of Department, oversee selection of textbooks and digital resources for students

Leadership and Collaboration

  • Leadership, management and support of Heads of Department, in collaboration with the Head of Learning and Innovation
  • As a member of the Senior School Leadership Team, advise on academic and curriculum matters, including other relevant groups as required (e.g. Year Coordinators, Counsellors, Head of Wellbeing, Student Futures Specialist)
  • Oversight of the Senior School timetable as a key member of the Timetable Committee, particularly with regard to student class placements and staffing allocations
  • Assist with interviews and recruitment of teaching staff
  • Assist with enrolment interviews and Senior School enrolment tours
  • Mentor student leaders as appropriate (e.g. prefects with academic portfolios)
  • Represent the School at relevant interschool networks, conferences and events
  • Contribute to School initiatives (e.g. strategic planning, Master Plan) as required

Leadership Responsibilities

As this is a senior leadership position within the School, the incumbent’s demonstrated

leadership attributes must be consistent with both the Australian Institute for Teaching and

School Leadership (AITSL), Professional Standards for Principals and the Lead Teacher

Standards.

  • Sustain wide current knowledge and understanding of key aspects of curriculum development and the State, National and International Level
  • Have a research focus on the education of students preparing them for the future
  • Work with Executive staff to promote the School as a Professional Learning Community
  • Provide an escalation point for Heads of Department to action student concerns
  • Be an active and involved member of appropriate professional networks
  • Think and act strategically about developments in education
  • Maintain own professional development and reading
  • Work with teaching staff experts to showcase best practice within St Luke’s and beyond
  • Attend regular and extra-ordinary meetings as required
  • Represent the School at various educational bodies and functions
  • Participate in internal School committees
  • Prepare and administer Budgets in areas of responsibility
  • Perform any other duties as requested by the Principal

Licenses/Certificates/Qualifications

  • Valid Working with Children Check required
  • Tertiary Qualification in Teaching
  • It is desirable that applicants for this role have or intend to attain post-graduate qualifications in educational leadership or another relevant area of professional interest
  • COVID-19 Vaccination Certificate

Physical/Work Environment Requirements

  • Strong physical, mental and emotional health to deal with the required demands and responsibilities of the role
