St Edmund’s College, Wahroonga is a Catholic Co-educational College in the Edmund Rice tradition from Years 5-12 and caters for students with a sensory disability and/or a mild to moderate intellectual disability. St Edmund’s College offers small classes, excellent facilities and provides personalised NSW Educational Standards Authority (NESA) education programs. We are seeking applicants for the following position:

Head of Teaching and Learning - Full time permanent position -

Beginning Term 1, 2025

We have a wonderful opportunity for a self-motivated, professional, and dedicated Head of Teaching and Learning. Reporting to the Principal, the successful candidate will have a primary strategic focus on working with teachers and other staff to continually improve educational standards, processes and initiatives, to enable excellent educational achievement for each student according to his/her ability.

The Head of Teaching & Learning is delegated to exercise direct responsibility in specific areas, as outlined by the Principal and in accordance with the College’s Strategic Plan. This may include: oversight of Classroom Teaching staff and KLA Coordinators; implementing NESA curriculum from Years 5 to 12 (Stages 3,4,5 & 6) including NESA Life Skills (7-12); assessment and reporting; educational data analysis.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Be a member of, and contribute to, the College Executive Team responsible to the Principal for the Teaching and Learning outcomes of students.
  • Model excellence in classroom teaching practice and classroom management strategies.
  • Develop and maintain a College environment which is conducive to optimal learning outcomes for all students;
  • Promote positive relationships and standards of behaviour within the College, which reflect Gospel values and provide a safe environment.
  • Oversee and regularly review student educational progress and associated management processes,
  • With the College Executive Team, help facilitate professional learning and development of staff.

Essential Criteria:

  • Commitment to the Catholic and Edmund Rice ethos of the school.  
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the school’s Vision and Mission, Strategic Goals and the EREA Charter Touchstones.  
  • A vision for special education and learning diversity 
  • Sound knowledge of Stage 3 NESA Curriculum and Stage 4, 5 & 6 NESA Life Skills Curriculum. 
  • Sound knowledge of Stage 3, 4, 5 & 6 special education evidence-based practices and pedagogy. 
  • Creativity and innovation within the educational context; 
  • Be able to extract and analyse educational data; 
  • The capacity to inspire and motivate teachers to constantly reflect, review and improve their teaching skills and practices; 
  • Knowledge of current educational initiatives and issues (e.g. Australian Curriculum, Special Education, VET, NESA, Implementation of ICT, National Professional Standards for Teachers); 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.  
  • Demonstrated commitment to student wellbeing. 
  • Proven ability to build and maintain positive relationships.  
  • Effective planning and organisational skills, including time management. 
  • Collaborative team member.   
  • Proven competence with use of information technology in a learning environment and in implementing NESA curriculum. 
  • An understanding of current educational issues, curriculum requirements and assessment. 
  • Acts professionally and maintains appropriate confidentiality.  
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications and a commitment to ongoing personal and professional learning. 
  • Current Teaching Registration with NESA. 
  • Participation in excursions, whole school events, co-curricular activities and camps.  
  • Current Class C drivers’ licence 
  • Willingness to drive a 12-seater school bus.  
  • Current WWCC Number and commitment to child protection practices.   
  • A commitment to creating an environment where the safety, wellbeing and participation of all children and young people is paramount. 

Desirable Criteria:

  • Knowledge of teaching students with sensory disabilities. 
  • Implementation and development of whole school initiatives.  
  • Evidence of relevant and recent professional development. 
  • Current Light Rigid (LR) drivers’ licence.
